Health

Health provision in the Puntland region suffered immensely following the Civil War in Somalia.  Fortunately, health professionals who fled during the height of the war have gradually begun returning to their country.  Intern, this has helped to improve health provision in the recent few years.  This was facilitated by local initiatives and donor interventions into the advancement of health delivery.  Tadamun Social Society (TASS) partnered with local and international health service providers to compliment the efforts of the Ministry of Health to combat high mortality and morbidity rates.

TASS’ motivation to improve health provision is based on the belief that health is a basic right and good health enhances human development.  The Puntland faces several factors that are compromising the quality of healthcare: general lack of quality medical care (mainly due to understaffing), lack of medical supplies, poor public health facilities and lack of awareness in the community of widespread illnesses.  TASS has focused on two health concerns in Puntland: tuberculosis and HIV/AIDs.

TASS opened the first ever Tuberculosis (TB) Centre in Puntland that has cured over 5,000 patients so far. Mercy TB Centre was officially inaugurated in 1996 and funded by Mercy USA for Aid & Development (MUSA).  It is also supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nation's World Food Programme (WFP) in providing medication and food for patients respectively. TASS is the implementing agency, which is responsible for the daily running and maintenance of the Centre as per the set strategy.  Currently, the center employs a TB specialist doctor and 9 health workers.

The Centre not only treats patients but also educates them on the best practices of TB prevention using the most effective TB treatment strategy, which is the Directly Observed Treatment Short-courses (DOTS) method.  Mercy TB Centre's cure rate is around 90%, compared to the international care rate average of 85% using the DOTS method.
