A glimpse of TASS-run projects
Education
TASS is running 17 primary and 5 secondary education establishments in 16 schools across seven districts in Puntland. The combined population of these schools is 9,800 students. To date, 41,968 pupils have attained primary education and 12,414 students have completed secondary schooling.
Education for Girls
In Somali society, many girls are denied the right to an education because of several factors; cultural norms, early marriage, gender stereotypes. TASS supports girls in primary and school education by sponsoring students and teaching skills that could offer work opportunities e.g. textiles and cookery.
Health
Tuberculosis is prevalent in Somalia and is one of the leading causes of high morbidity and mortality rates. To eliminate the killer disease, TASS opened the first ever TB Centre in Puntland at the height of the civil war, which has cured 2,014 infected people from 1996-1999.
We have collaborated with the Puntland AIDs Commission to raise awareness of sexually-transmitted diseases. HIV/AIDs is widespread in Somalia, which we are counteracting by setting up school clubs to educate young people.
Child Protection Advocacy (CPA)
TASS is responsible for monitoring and supervising the Child Protection Advocacy programme, which is supported by UNICEF, the Ministry of Women and Development and Family Affairs. TASS strives to inform parents and other caregivers on children protection and rights. The aim is to prevent all forms of child abuse and to provide children with physical and moral fitness.
Community Development Driven (CDD)
TASS aspires to help the Somali community in the Puntland state to help themselves out of poverty. Therefore, it has established community-driven programmes to promote unity and a moral society. TASS has helped to mobilise 62 communities in the Mudug, Nugal and Bari regions.
Water
TASS has addressed the dire need of water wells in the region following severe droughts in the last two decades. As a result of rigorous fundraising and community efforts, it has established 42 hand-dug wells in the Puntland state.
Gender-based Violence (GBV)
The conflict in Somalia, which began in 1991, has led to a breakdown of law and order. This has resulted in widespread rape and other forms of gender-based violence in Puntland. Furthermore, women and girls have faced prejudice over the lack of assistance available to those who have suffered abuse. TASS has worked with victims of physical, psychological and mental abuse to help them progress in life. It has also raised awareness to educate people on the implications of gender-based violence.
Emergency Response
Natural and environmental disasters in the past have resulted in widespread devastation in Somalia. Communities have been the biggest victims as a result. TASS has acknowledged how communities could be encouraged to help themselves in emergency situations by responding swiftly and efficiently.
Youth Development Project
TASS has committed to engaging with the youth of Somalia to help them earn a living and develop new skills for better career prospects. It has raised awareness of antisocial activities e.g. piracy, child soldiers, violence. TASS has established youth empowerment programmes to encourage leadership, teamwork and employment opportunities.
Psychosocial Project
Long-term suffering and destitution following war can lead to many psychological problems, which could have lasting effects if they are not acknowledged. Working in partnership with the Trans-Cultural Pyschosocial Organisation, TASS has started a Psychosocial Project in the Mudug region. This is aimed at support for children, mobilising communities and helping teachers identify psychological problems in children.
